An artistic research into the experiences of women in the region of Galicia during the Spanish Civil War and posterior dictatorship, RMGCEG focuses on the artist‘s grandmothers and her mother, who lived through various phases of the conflict. Parallelly, the artist explores the lasting impact on women from her own generation, born after the regime was over.
Beginning through the study of the use of plants and flowers in Galician celtic pagan rituals, mainly executed by women, the research spread and bridged to the stories of repression of female knowledge in the region. Despite previous historical attempts of erasure of this knowledge by the catholic church, this repression saw a strong revival during Franco’s regime between 1939 and 1975.
The research eventually expanded to the cruel repression women, especially those from progressive circles and ties to the feminist and/or communist movements, suffered during the Civil war (1936-1939) at the hands of the Nationalist during the military conflict.
The central anchor point of the research remains around the life stories and experiences her grandmothers shared with her, the details and lack thereof, and the impact their experiences and the repression had in the way they interact with the artist mother and the artist herself. From a life in an authoritarian hard patriarchal and religious system, to the start of democracy. The clash between her grandmothers' and her mother's generation, who lived through the end of the regime and the boom of democracy during her teenage years and early youth . And lastly, the self-reflection of the artist herself, as the first member in this chain of generations of females who was raised fully in a democratic system, partially during a period of progressive government.
